Recent Events-Dec. 2009

For the third consecutive year, the Sandusky County Chapter of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association is partnering with The Dictionary Project to provide personal dictionaries to fourth-graders throughout Sandusky County.
More than 1000 dictionaries were distributed in Bellevue, Clyde-Green Springs, Fremont, Gibsonburg, Lakota, and Woodmore schools.  Students also received dictionaries at Bellevue's Immaculate Conception, Clyde's St. Mary, Fremont's Sacred Heart, St. Ann, St. Joseph, and Temple Christian Academy, and Solomon Lutheran in Woodville.
The teachers' group expanded the program this year by buying thesauruses for each sixth grade classroom in the county.  The books were distributed in late October.
This list of who donated to the program can also be found on the inside cover of each dictionary:  Clyde Kiwanis Club; Bellevue Kiwanis Club; First Church of God, Risingsun; June and Richard Knepper; Lakota Young Farmers; Unique Fabrications Inc.; Sue and Ken Badertscher; Barndt Funeral Home; Bradner American Legion Post 338; Jim and Sophia Draeger; Myra Gebhart; Lindsey Lions Club; Fremont Federation of Women; Gibsonburg American Legion Auxiliary; Rebecca Heimlich, in memory of Mae Belle W. Tornow; Kansas UMC; Barb and Greg Lehman; On the Mark Enterprises LTD; and Soroptimist International of Fremont.

Scorta, the Sandusky County chapter of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, is once again partnering with The Dictionary Project.  The Dictionary Project is a national drive with the sole mission of providing students with their own personal dictionaries.
Last year, because of the generosity of many organizations, businesses, and individuals, SCORTA was able to purchase and distribute nearly 1200 dictionaries to 4th grade students throughout Sandusky County.  The school systems that participated were Bellevue, Clyde-Green Springs, Fremont, Gibsonburg, Lakota, and Woodmore.  Dictionaries were also distributed to parochial students attending Immaculate Conception in Bellevue, St. Mary's in Clyde, Fremont's Sacred Heart, St. Ann, and St. Joseph, and Solomon Lutheran in Woodville.
Fourth grade teachers were given a notebook containing lesson plans and activities written and compiled by Sue Badertscher, a SCORTA member and a National Board Certified Teacher, to use with their students.  These activities showed students how to use their dictionaries and addressed the objectives on the Ohio Achievement Test.
We ask that you consider becoming a part of this exciting and worthwhile project.  Below are suggested levels of donations:

SCORTA-Kroger Fundraiser Gift Card Program

Are you a Kroger shopper?  If so, at no cost to you, you may contribute to SCORTA's Scholarship Fund.  Using Sandusky County Chamber of Commerce 501(c)3 status, SCORTA will receive 5% of the amounts loaded on a SCORTA issued gift card.  It works this way:

You buy a SCORTA-issued gift card for $5.00 because $5.00 is already loaded on the card.  Then you reload more money onto the card at any Kroger store, for example $100.00.  This can be done at the cash register but before checking out your groceries.  If the card is reloaded at the Customer Service Desk, you will need to wait several minutes before using the card as payment.  There is no wait time if reloaded at the checkout register.  You may use cash, check, credit or debit card to pay for your reloading of the gift card.  Then you use the gift card as payment for your groceries, prescriptions, or fuel.  Your register receipt will show the balance left on the gift card after payment.  When the balance is low, just reload the same card again.  Again, there is no cost to you; the only investment is the time it takes to reload the gift card.  The benefit:  5% of your total reloads will be Kroger's contribution to the SCORTA Scholarship Fund.  You do not need to be a SCORTA member to purchase these gift cards.  Buy them for family members and/or friend to use.  See Ken Badertscher or Ellen Honsperger to purchase cards.
